I Tunes

OK, so I have this quirky thing about me... I often send myself messages while sleeping or just as I am about to wake up by 'playing' popular songs as nocturnal Muzak.
That is, I often wake up with a very specific song running over and over in my mind. Unlike many dreams I may have had, these songs come through clearly enough for me to identify them. Then the fun begins, because I have the charge to ascertain what the heck Spirit was trying to say to me using these tunes.

Sometimes, a song will play ad nauseum in my head upon awakening because it might have been the last song I heard on the car radio before turning it off; or because, it is a song or chant that I have hoped would play on a loop so that I could use it as a musical mantra.

And then there are the songs that are clearly playing on the Dream Jukebox for a very specific reason. I pay attention to these songs because they speak to me in a language I can understand. The music and lyrics are familiar and often have personal or historic meaning to me.

We all know my loyalty and passion for all things Apple and I, too appreciate the amazing cultural transformation that has taken place since iTunes were created. An added bonus to that musical gift is that nowadays, one can go online and look up the lyrics to almost any song that plays in short "Name That Tune" snippets in your brain.

Today, I woke up with a familiar melody and lyrics of a song that I could not complete in my waking hour. Something like..."Ooooh, child, things are gonna get easier...ooh, ooh child, things are gonna get brighter." Once I was unable to ascertain the rest of the song, the artist(s) or the title, I ran to my computer to look up the song, and sure enough it was there. Allow me to share it with you for those who may be curious or those who want confirmation of their sing-a-long guess:

Ooh child things are gonna get easier
Ooh child things will get brighter
Ooh child things are gonna get easier
Ooh child things will get brighter

Some day yes we'll put it together and we'll get all down some day yes
when the world is much brighter some day
yes we'll walk in the rays of the beautiful sun
some day when the world is much brighter

Ooh child things are gonna get easier just you wait
and see things will get brighter
oh my baby boy things are gonna get easier baby girl things will get brighter

Some day yes we'll put it together and we'll get all down some day yes
when the world is much brighter some day
yes we'll walk in the rays of the beautiful sun
some day when the world is much brighter

Donnie McClurkin -lyricist
The Five Stairsteps - musical artists

And then once I identify the rest of the song, I get the opportunity to determine what about the song has significance for me. And then it hit me. Today, at our church we introduced our first Taize service followed by a Community Gathering and Visioning Meeting.
I smiled.
As of today, things were brighter and were going to get easier.

I am grateful my ....er, I tunes.

And "child", it's time to:

Ease on down, ease on down the road
Come on, ease on down
Ease on down the road
Don't you carry nothin'
That might be a load
Come on, ease on down
Ease on down the road.

InJoy,
Mel
